Pet Food Guide: Foods To Avoid

We all want the best for our furry companions. While they are for the most part, very much like us humans. There are many aspects which they are not the same; particularly on the subject of food. They’re also excellent at begging for a taste of the things we’re eating or cooking. As adorable as they’ll be, our pets can’t usually belly the identical foods as us — a few foods in particular are especially toxic to their health.

We’ve compiled a list of foods that are toxic to pets as a guide to stopping accidental toxic exposure to your four-legged companion.

Fatty Foods
Foods that are high in fats can cause vomiting and diarrhea. The ingestion of fatty foods in puppies can cause pancreatitis and certain breeds like miniature schnauzers, Shetland sheepdogs, and Yorkshire terriers are more vulnerable to it than other breeds. Though it might be tempting to share you leftovers, junk food or foods that are cooked in grease with your dog, it should be avoided at all costs.

Bones and Fat Trimmings
Table scraps often contain meat fats that we do not consume and contrary to popular belief, these are in no way healthy for your pets. The fat trimmed from meat, both cooked and uncooked, can lead to health problems such as pancreatitis and although it seems natural to offer a canine a bone. Your furry companion can choke on it if the bone splinters and may cause an obstruction or lacerations of your dog’s digestive system.

Caffeine
Coffee, tea, dietary pills or anything containing caffeine should never be given to your pet. These foods can have an effect on the heart, stomach, intestines of your furry companions and some of these symptoms include restlessness, hyperactivity, muscle twitching, accelerated heart rate and blood stress levels and seizures.

Alcohol
While it should be common sense to NOT give your pets any alcohol. It does happen and most of the time the culprits are deserts that contain alcohol or yeast-containing dough. The ingestion of alcohol can cause drops in blood sugar, blood pressure and body temperature. Intoxicated animals can experience seizures and breathing failure.
